Falcons appoint new Intrust Super Cup head coach

The Sunshine Coast Falcons would like to announce Sam Mawhinney as the Falcons Intrust Super Cup head coach for 2020.

Mawhinney was successful in guiding the Falcons' Hastings Deering Colts team  to the premiership this year and will now take the head coach role of the Intrust Super Cup team when they return for pre-season training mid November.

Mawhinney has been involved with the Falcons since 2013 in various coaching capacities and was also assistant coach to Eric Smith for the Melbourne Storm National Youth Competition (NYC) U20s team in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018 Sam was assistant coach of the Falcons' Intrust Super Cup team before taking the reigns of the Hastings Deering Colts team this year and taking the team to the Falcons' first ever under-20 premiership.

“We believe that Sam has served his apprenticeship and is now ready to take control of the Intrust Super Cup team," Falcons CEO Chris Flannery said.

"He has had experience at the Intrust Super Cup level previously as an assistant coach and has also coached at the NYC (NRL U20s) and Hastings Deering Colts levels - of course winning the premiership this season.

“Sam is also a Sunshine Coast local so is very passionate about developing our local talent into future Intrust Super Cup players.

“He has a great relationship with all of the playing group and staff and I am sure that he is going to do a fantastic job leading the Falcons football club into the future”.
