TAFE Queensland and Queensland Rugby League are proud to launch the Maroons Academy, a new and exciting partnership to deliver a bespoke training program to students looking to start their career in rugby league.
Specialised training tailored toward a variety of careers in rugby league is at the forefront of the initiative that provides participants with the opportunity to develop key skills for a career in the professional sports industry.
QRL Chief Operating Officer Rohan Sawyer said the opportunity to partner with Queensland’s largest and most experienced training provider was a significant development for the code.
“The Maroons Academy will prepare students to meet the demands of working in a professional sports environment,” Sawyer said.
“Students will study events management, learn how to develop coaching programs and increase business acumen. This study is coupled with 120 hours of code-specific behind the scenes training with QRL coaches and staff.
“This course could also upskill current rugby league staff, officials, coaches and volunteers to further their careers and lead the future of rugby league in Queensland.”
TAFE Queensland General Manager (Brisbane) Dr Paul Wilson said this unique qualification had been designed for those seeking a career in rugby league.
“Students participating in the Maroons Academy will have the opportunity to work with different professionals across many facets," Wilson said.
As well as obtaining a diploma qualification, students will receive tailored training in sports medicine, strength and conditioning, first aid, coaching and refereeing.
The Maroons Academy forms part of TAFE Queensland’s Sports Academy program, a new initiative to provide sport-specific training across the state, following on from the highly successful pilot program with the Brisbane Roar FC.
The program is already drawing key support from some of the biggest names in the game, with leading Queensland Maroons players Jai Arrow and Tallisha Harden attending today’s announcement at TAFE Queensland’s South Bank campus.
"Anything that helps to improve the professionalism of our sport is welcomed wholeheartedly by the players," Arrow said.
"We appreciate how hard the support staff work behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly while giving us the best chance to do our job well on the field.”
Harden said the program provided an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience by working directly with clubs and leagues throughout the state.
"We are looking forward to supporting and guiding students through their commencement of a career in rugby league," Harden said.
The Maroons Academy Program will see students complete the following qualifications:
- Diploma of Sports Development (SIS50612)
- Sports Medicine Australia Level 1 Sports Trainer Certificate
- Australian Strength and Conditioning Association Level 1 Strength and Conditioning Coach
- Rugby League First Aid Certificate
- Club Coaching Certificate
- Referee Foundation 1 Certificate
Students will be able to register their interest for the 2020 Semester One intake online.
Students are encouraged to attend TAFE Queensland’s Open day held on Sunday 11 August where they can speak to teachers further about the course and register their interest.
