June 18: Billy and the GOAT; Dowling and Tamati duke it out

On this day, two all-time greats entered the world on exactly the same day, Greg Dowling and Kevin Tamati got acquainted at Lang Park, while one of the game's characters called time.

1983

Incredibly, two future greats greet the world on the same day in Queensland. Cameron Smith, who many now consider to be the best ever, is born in Brisbane, while Billy Slater is born at Nambour.

1985

A brawl between opposing props Greg Dowling (Australia) and Kevin Tamati (New Zealand) threatens to spill into crowd during a Test at Lang Park. After being banished for fighting, the pair exchange words as they left the field before resuming their stoush on the sideline.

2004

Queensland hero Billy Slater is honoured with a parade through the main street of his home town, Innisfail, as he celebrates his 21st birthday.

2011

Sydney Roosters’ journeyman hooker Mark Riddell announces his immediate retirement at the age of 30. Known affectionately as 'Piggy', he played 250 games for the Dragons, Eels, Wigan and the Roosters.

2013

South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt earns a call-up to the NSW State of Origin team at the age of 30, following the sacking of Canberra winger Blake Ferguson.

2014

New South Wales end eight years of State of Origin misery when they clinch game two 6-4 in a dour and spiteful contest at ANZ Stadium.
