Hunters hold on for hard-fought win over Magpies

A penalty goal from Nick Hasu proved crucial for the Hunters who held on to record a 24-22 win over Souths Logan to close out Round 11 in the Intrust Super Cup.

In a close game, both sides scored four tries each, with the home team getting off to a good start before the Magpies clawed their way back into the contest.

Winger Gairo Kapana got the scoring started for the Hunters in the 10th minute with his four-pointer, but the conversion was missed.

However, they went further in front with Terry Wapi from the Agmark Gurias crossed. Playing fullback, it was an Intrust Super Cup debut to remember for Wapi whose try was a vital one for his side.

The Magpies though worked hard to try and claim what would have been their second only win over the Hunters if successful - and posted two quick tries in response.

Big forward Mitch Frei is a handful for most teams and picked up his seventh try of the season when he was over for the visitors in the 22nd minute.

Winger Matt Soper-Lawler was over for try number six and then try number seven either side of the break, with his second - and the Guy Hamilton conversion - locking the scores at 16-16 with five minutes gone in the second half.

Both teams scored one more try each in the second half in a tense match - but it was Hasu's penalty goal in the 52nd minute of the match that gave the Hunters their second win of the season to the delight of their home fans.

Next week, the Hunters travel to Redcliffe to take on the Dolphins on Saturday night in what should be a good game between two teams keen to pull themselves up the ladder.

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls will also play on Saturday, hosting the Townsville Blackhawks at BMD Kougari Oval.
