After a full weekend of football action at Townsville Sports Reserve, Mackay ran out winners and triumphantly lifted the 2019 Foley Shield.
On Saturday night, Mackay Cutters won both games against Northern Pride in the Intrust Super Cup and Hastings Deering, with the Under 20s claiming the win against the previously undefeated Pride); while their A Grade Mackay and District Rugby League team defeated Cairns and Townsville at the Foley Shield.
The Northern Region Women’s Championships were also held at the Townsville Sports Ground in a big weekend of football.
Out of the six games each region played in this year's Foley Shield, Mackay only dropped one match, with their Intrust Super Cup team beating both their northern counterparts so far this year.
Townsville and Cairns both recorded two wins each, but Mackay were convincing winners for the first time in eight years.
Mackay and District Rugby League Chairman Adam Wright, who played in Mackay’s last successful Foley Shield campaign in 2011, was on hand to celebrate the victory with the Mackay team coached by Wayne Barnett.
QRL Northern manager Scott Nosworthy congratulated the Mackay region for what they had achieved on and off the field this year.
He also encouraged other regions across Queensland to observe and learn from the structure in place in Mackay, as in recent years, rugby league has improved in leaps and bounds.
