The Ipswich Jets and CQ Capras head west this weekend to play in a special Intrust Super Cup game.
The central Queensland town of Woorabinda is two hours south west of Rockhampton and is situated on the traditional lands of the Wadja Wadja / Yungulu Aboriginal people.
On Saturday, their footy field Gordon Henry Oval will become the 100th venue to host an Intrust Super Cup game.
Match: Jets v Capras
Round 9 -
home Team
Jets
8th Position
away Team
Capras
14th Position
Venue: Woorabinda, Woorabinda
The town is also home to Intrust Super Cup 20-year anniversary team member Reggie Cressbook who is a former Jet himself.
Currently working for the Woorabinda Council, he told QRL Media correspondent Michael Nunn how excited he was about the upcoming game.
“I am so happy it’s my old team the Ipswich Jets,” Cressbrook said. “It’s going to be such a great day of football and entertainment.
“A lot of surrounding areas will come to the game, Dingo, Baralaba and Rockhampton they will come from everywhere.
“It’s great that the Jets are doing this, we have the field ready and we would be expecting more than 1000 people.
“Deadly Choices is sponsoring the event so it’s an alcohol and sugar free event and we will have plenty of things to do for children and entertainment.”
The game is being taken to the community thanks to the work that has been done in collaboration between the Ipswich Jets, the Artie Beetson Foundation and IUIH who work closely to create healthy life choice awareness using rugby league as a driver of change for the Indigenous community.
The Jets have worked with the Queensland Rugby League, NRL, CQ Capras and Woorabinda Aboriginal Council as well as a number of other organisations to make the game a possibility.
The team will also play in a Woorabinda Warriors Deadly Choices stripe, with the jerseys to be gifted to the community after the game so they can raise funds.
Entry is free and there is a big day planned – starting from first thing in the morning with a breakfast club being set up to provide an opportunity for the community to have a bite with Capras and Jets players, who will be joined by former rugby league players Preston Campbell and Steve Renouf.
