A carnival-like atmosphere and a grand final replay will kick off the this year’s Universities Rugby League Queensland competition with an Anzac Day triple header tomorrow.
Hosts the Griffith Dragons will have food trucks and a DJ on site as all six clubs battle it out for the first competition points of the season at Griffith’s Nathan campus.
A repeat of last year’s tight URLQ decider will open the season when the Griffith Dragons meet the premiers the University of Queensland Hounds.
It was a stunning grand final last year, with the Hounds sneaking home to win their second premiership in a row with a late long-range try.
The Dragons will still be feeling that disappointment, so will be primed for a crack at their great rivals.
The match will kick off at 3pm, with the Griffith Logan Redbacks and Queensland University of Technology Trouts to follow at 4.15pm.
Both sides missed the finals last year, but have built well in the off-season and will be looking for early premiership points.
In the final game at 5.30pm, Gold Coast Griffith Panthers will meet Australian Catholic University.
The Panthers were the early surprise packets last year and led the competition after three rounds.
They went on to make the finals, as did ACU, and both teams will be after a similar start this season.
