It’s taken at least 15 years but the Sio brothers will finally play a rugby league game together.
Chris Sio will make his debut for the Devils in the Intrust Super Cup XXXX Rivalry Round clash with Souths Logan Magpies at Davies Park. His brother Michael will play his 14th game for the Devils.
They will pack down with backrower Brendan Frei, whose brother Mitchell will play for the Magpies.
Lots of brothers and lots of stories, although the Sios have never played together until now.
They were both students at St Paul’s College, Auckland, and both played rugby league after their rugby union-loving father suggested his boys may enjoy the other code.
Michael (pictured left) went on to become the New Zealand Warriors’ Under 20 player of the year. Chris received the same award five years later. Younger brother Lewis also represented the Warriors’ Under 20s.
They went different ways until last summer when Chris, following a season with the Point Chevalier Pirates in New Zealand, moved to Brisbane to live with his older brother.
Their mother and sisters, aged 11 and 8, also joined them in Brisbane.
“I was keen for a change of scenery so (Devils coach Rohan Smith) said I was welcome to come here for the pre-season and see what happened,” Chris said.
“It’s been a lot of fun. I’m enjoying my footy and I’m grateful for the chance to play with Norths.”
Chris pushed his way into the Devils squad after a man-of-the-match performance for Valleys in last weekend’s opening Brisbane Rugby League clash with Wests.
His strong frame is built for the forward pack – Chris prefers playing lock – alongside his versatile brother who has filled several positions since making his Devils debut 12 months ago.
“This is the first time we will play together,” Michael said.
“It’s going to be enjoyable because we have always been a few years apart so it hasn’t been possible until now.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing under Rohan and I’m glad Chris is now getting the same chance.
“I’m excited to share the field with Chris, playing together let alone at (Intrust Super Cup) level, we never thought it’d happen. It’s a proud moment for myself.”
