Rugby league is fuelled by the passion of fans and of volunteers – and this is especially true at the grassroots level.
Before hitting the road on their way to their final destination on the QRL's Drought Relief Tour; the touring party including former Maroons Mick Crocker, David Shillington, Chris Walker headed to Rowden Park; home of rugby league in St George to meet with some of the club’s dedicated committee members.
They also were treated to a tour of the club’s Memorabilia Shed; a treasure trove of the history of not only the club; but of rugby league in the area (touring party with St George members pictured above).
Life member of the club and well-known and respected rugby league identity John Barrett took the players and touring party through a number of the items that have put on display in the reimaged donga.
Then, it was time to hit the road for the two-hour trip north-east to Roma.
After a bite of lunch; Crocker, Shillington and NRL Development Officer Grant Bignell headed to Roma State College to speak with the students there.
Both players gave them class a rundown of their playing history and some advice on how to succeed, not only in football, but in whatever their passion might be.
The players and some selected students were then put through their paces in a competitive game of touch, before it was time to head to a Men of League catch up in anticipation of the Saturday golf day.
The tour concludes today (Saturday, October 20), with the touring party flying back into Brisbane after stopping by the golf day in the morning.
