While it wasn’t a final for the tournament trophy, Queensland Country and Queensland City faced off in a great game where the spirit of the players shone through.
It took a sideline conversion just before the final siren by Jillaroo and Central Queensland representative Chelsea Baker to seal the win for the Country side 22-20.
They were down 10-6 at halftime, but were able to fight their way back into the game with a late try out on the left wing to Kody House drawing scores level.
It had the fans scrambling to see if extra time would be played in a final; but Baker coolly lined up the kick and slotted it over.
The afternoon was capped off with NSW Country being crowned the Harvey Norman Women’s National Championships winners for 2018 after coming out on top against their NSW City rivals in a fantastic final fitting of the three days that came before it.
It was a close contest throughout and scores were locked at 8-8 at halftime before a late try broke both the deadlock and City hearts.
Jillaroo Sammy Bremner, who has battled serious injury in recent seasons, capped off a great carnival to be named Player of the Tournament as well.
Earlier in the day, the Australian Defence Force and Combined Affliated States set the tone for a great day’s play with the ADF side prevailing in a tight game 12-4.
A full replay of the NSW Country v NSW City final, plus a one-hour highlights package on the championships will be aired by FOX in coming weeks.
