Northern farewell league stalwarts

Cairns Rugby League bid a fond farewell earlier this month to North Queensland Rugby League stalwarts Tom and Sandy Tassell, who are leaving the tropics to move closer to family in Brisbane.

Tom has given almost 50 years’ service to both junior and senior rugby league for Kangaroos, Cairns, and North Queensland as either coach, administrator, selector, or advisor at all levels, and served most recently as a Director with the Jones Park Board of Management.

Tom is a life member of Cairns Kangaroos and Cairns District Rugby League, while Sandy is the first female Life Member of Kangaroos Junior Rugby League.

The Tassell Trophy Challenge Under 14 Carnival – hosted by Kangaroos Junior Rugby League – has been played each September for the past 17 years.

It was named in honour of the Tassell family, acknowledging their immense contribution to the game.

The club has announced the 2018 carnival will feature the inaugural female competition with the teams playing for the Sandy Tassell Trophy, in conjunction with the male competition.

The carnival will be played on September 22-23.

Nominations will open next week with details on the website www.kangaroos.net.au
