NRL Development (in partnership with Toowoomba Junior Rugby League) are currently conducting a free four-week non-contact competition for girls 12 to 18 years.

The girls 9-a-side competition kicked off on Thursday, November 2 with 46 girls attending the initial session. The girls were split into team teams and played each other.

The aim of the competition is to prepare sides for 2018 season and allow the current group of registered girls who are playing rugby league to remain keen while giving players new to the sport the opportunity to experience the games in a non-contact version.

Next season, Toowoomba Junior Rugby League is aiming to nominate a number of teams in the established South East Queensland divisional competition in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups.

This year, the TJRL entered two girls teams into the SEQ competition, with the Under 15 and Under 18 team both travelling every week to play.

The participating girls came from across the region including from areas outside the Toowoomba area such as Talwood, Miles, Warwick, Dalby and St George.

The coaches for next year’s Toowoomba teams have been appointed and have been attending the 9-a-side nights to get the know and assist the players with their skills.

In the future, the TJRL is hoping to grow a competition involving the TJRL clubs in future years, with the possibility of growth for other regions to participate in this competition.

The upcoming Harvey Norman Girls Clinic on November 25 will be a culmination of the four-week 9-a-side competition and is also an opportunity for girls from the surrounding areas (South West, South Burnett, Lockyer, Warwick and District) to come together for a fun day of rugby league.

Come along, girls will be placed in a team and have some fun!
