The Men of League Foundation announced its 2017 Life Member at its National Gala Dinner at Hyatt Regency Sydney last week.
The award was announced by Men of League Foundation Chairman Prof the Hon. Stephen Martin and was presented to Queensland rugby league stalwart Darryl Van de Velde.
Foundation member number 6,079, Darryl has been a Foundation member since 2008, the President of the Foundation’s Queensland Committee since February 2012 and a National Board member for five years.
Frank Barrett, Chief Executive Officer of the Men of League Foundation, said: “Darryl is a well-known and highly respected rugby league identity, particularly in Queensland. He has a long and well credentialed commitment to rugby league and provides the Foundation with unique guidance and counsel from the perspective of a former professional rugby league footballer, coach and administrator.
“I’m honoured to have been able to work with Darryl and directly see the huge benefit that he provides to the Foundation and the rugby league community with his administration and management experience and commitment to the wellbeing and care of members of the rugby league community.
“Darryl currently serves as the Queensland Rugby League Statewide Competitions Director and is responsible for working with the 14 rugby league clubs on the development of QRL’s premier competition – the Intrust Super Cup. His work with the QRL and the Men of League Foundation sees him regularly engage with the rugby league community around Queensland including rural and remote areas to help promote the game.
“Darryl’s devotion to the development and enhancement of our game at the grassroots level is reflected in his tireless work for the Foundation. His dedication to caring for the men, women and children of the rugby league community has been critical to the success of the Men of League Foundation in Queensland.
“This is a wonderful recognition of Darryl’s devotion and commitment and contribution to the Foundation and I congratulate him on the award."
