Mt Gravatt, Toowoomba and Souths are gearing up for grand final football after they won their way to the 2016 decider in their respective grades last weekend in the SEQ Senior Women’s competition.
The qualifying semi-final rounds were played last weekend at Souths Brandon Park.
In the C Division elimination final, Logan City Hawks proved too good for the University of Queensland team, winning comfortably 38-0, crossing for eight tries.
It was Mount Gravatt that earned the first grand final spot, although they had to work hard to overcome a determined Inala outfit for a good 24-10 win.
Wynnum Manly ended the North Ipswich season with a 14-4 victory in a game that kept the supporters from both teams on the edge of their seats.
The other B Division match was also a thriller with Sunnybank and Toowoomba swapping the lead on several occasions before the Fillies sealed the 22-20 win with a late try.
Clever halfback Ana-Marie Afuie scored two tries for Sunnybank to keep them in with a chance. Toowoomba now has a week’s break before the grand final.
Carina led Beerwah by 4-0 at halftime, but the more fancied Bulldogs crossed for four second half tries to overcome the committed Carina girls.
The 16-4 win keeps Beerwah’s hopes for a maiden A Division premiership alive for another week.
In the other A Division clash, the class of the experienced South group was evident throughout a comfortable win.
The Magpies raced to an early 10–0 lead, and despite many raids by the Bears a late try saw Souths in front by 14 points to nil at half-time.
Again an early onslaught in the second term saw Souths extend their advantage, before a late consolation try to Burleigh saw the final score 34-6 for a good Souths win.
Veteran centre Teresa Anderson scored a double for the Magpies to earn another grand final chance.
