The FNQ Challenge was held at Stan Williams Oval in Cairns last weekend with four Far North regions competing for NQ United selection.

Northern Cape was picked out of the Cape Cluster competition teams featuring Weipa, Mapoon and Napranum, while Southern Cape was selected from Coen, Lockhart River and Aurukun.

Torres team players came from Thursday Island and outer islands who play in the Zenadth Kes competition and NPA. Palm Island was the fourth team to make up the Challenge.

Southern and Northern teams travelled some 13 hours by car to participate for a pathway to higher honours with Torres flying in and Palm Island making the bus trip up to Cairns from Townsville.

Games were extremely competitive with all teams playing three games over the day. Winners of this year’s Challenge was Torres and all games were played in great spirit.

The NQ United team will now play Queensland Outback in Townsville on July 16 as a curtain raiser to the Intrust Super Cup game featuring the Blackhawks.

Rugby league in the Far North is on the way up with the communities and islands embracing and wanting more of the Greatest Game of All.
