This Friday night, Jillaroo and Queensland Women’s representative Annette Brander will tackle the Kiwi Ferns and the Sunshine Coast will have hundreds of young supporters watching to support a favourite local achiever.
Only a few weeks ago, NRL Game Development named a Schoolgirls Carnival in honour of Annette’s many achievements in the game.
Fourteen schools from across the coast – from Under 12 to Under 18 – competed in a fantastic day of rugby league action and Annette was impressed with the skill of the young Jillaroo hopefuls.
She was also on hand to present the winning schools with the inaugural Brander Cups, while talking to the hundreds of girls to share the story of her pathway to the Jillaroos.
Annette is a credit to herself and family and the young girls enjoyed being able to speak with her and grab a photo.
Girls and Women’s Rugby League continues to grow rapidly on the Sunshine Coast with more than 250 girls competing each weekend in girls-only club competition.
Pathways for girls playing rugby league in the region have never been better, with Under 14 and Under 16 Girls Black and Gold representative teams just coming back from 47th Battalion Carnival held in Gayndah last weekend.
The Under 14 Black team and Under 16 Gold team were crowned winners of the carnival.
From this carnival, Under 14 and Under 16 Falcons teams have been named and will now play at Kingaroy against teams from Wide Bay, Toowoomba and Rockhampton.
From this carnival, a Central Queensland team is selected to play at the State Junior Carnival.
Under 12 girls also have the opportunity to play for their schools at a State Carnival in 2016 and in weekly club competition, while Sunshine Coast Under 18 representative teams will be picked later in the year.
Annette’s club side Beerwah Bulldogs are having a great year with many girls selected in the Central Crows team to attend the Senior Queensland Divisional carnival.
There is also an All Girls Challenge being held on the Sunshine Coast from July 8-10 at Caloundra.
