The new-look Caloundra RSL A-grade cup for the SCGRL is back in full-swing and the fans at Maroochydore for Sunday afternoon’s match-up between Maroochydore-Coolum Swans and the Caloundra Sharks were treated to some quality football.
The two sides went try-for-try on a glorious Sunshine Coast afternoon - and scores were locked at 22-all at the 70 minute mark. But the Sharks put on three un-answered tries in the last 10 minutes, recording a 40-22 win.
The Sharks’ Justin Otto managed to bag two tries and kick three goals, ensuring he was the leading point-scorer, with Kendall, Stroud, Lynagh and the Ainsworth brothers all crossing the line.
Usual suspect Troy Mendham bagged himself a try and three goals, with team-mate Paul Backhaus scoring a double.
The win cements second spot on the ladder for the Sharks, and ensures they remain the number one contenders to the un-beaten Kawana Dolphins.
In their first game without leading point-scorer Jordan Meads, the Dolphins ensured their dream season continued with a crushing 34-point win over Nambour Crushers at Kawana.
The 22-year-old Meads will travel to the UK to take up a contract with English side Gateshead Thunder, as they aim to secure a spot in the English Division 1 competition.
However the loss of Meads hasn’t dented his former side’s ability to score points - with six players crossing the line and Ryan Boyd scoring a double in their 40-6 win.
After a promising start to the season, the Crushers sit in second-last place on the competition ladder, only three points ahead of cellar-dwelling Noosa/Gympie combined outfit.
And things aren’t getting any better for the Pirate-Devils side, going down by 22 points to the Caboolture Snakes.
Six players crossed the line in the 32-10 drubbing, putting the Snakes just one point behind the third placed Maroochydore-Coolum.
The competition will take another break next weekend in the run home to the finals series. All six teams will compete in the new-look series, following the axing of the Bribie Island Warrigals and the Noosa and Gympie mid-season merger.
