The cool, blustery conditions didn’t detract from what was a great day of junior footy for the 2014 Presidents Cup hosted by Brothers. The majority of the games came down to the wire and even included a golden point result in the U13/14 Development Cup, proving these D cup games are very popular and a great concept for the Junior Rugby League.
The TJRL were also very privileged to have the company of life members Doug Anderson along with Bill and Thelma Pollard. They came along to spend most of the day at the footy with us and presented medallions and trophies to the players and referees, it was an honor to have them attend.
The day started bright and early with an 8.30am kick off with Dalby playing Highfields in the U11’s. This proved to be a fast paced, good quality game with the boys throwing everything into their game with the result going Dalby’s way 18 points to 12.
The under 12 game also ended up closer than was indicated midway through the game with Pittsworth taking the upper hand after Souths scored a quick early try. To their credit Souths hit back towards the end of the second half but Pittsworth’s defence was good enough to hold them out to take the win 32-24.
The U11/12 Development Cup went all Gatton’s way with the boys taking a comfortable win 34-0 over the Brothers Leprechauns. Although the score line didn’t reflect so it was still an entertaining game of footy.
Gatton finished the end of the first round at the top of the ladder in the under 13’s age group but were up against a very determined South’s outfit who ended up coming away with the win 26-18. This was a very good clash and the boys from both sides dug deep, but Souths were able to hold on for the win.
Once again Souths were represented with the U14 boys taking on the Highfields Eagles. This was another game that came down to the wire with the crowd really starting to get vocal, feeling the pressure of a great close game. Both sides delivered great scrambling defence to keep it to a reasonably low scoring affair with Souths coming away the victors 16 points to 14.
What was clearly the game of the day the U13/14 Development Cup went to golden point. The Oakey Bears took on the Valleys Roosters and the lead changed many time making it the most exciting game with the boys leaving absolutely nothing in the tank. With the scores tied up at 26 all the game headed to golden point and with only a minute or two left on the clock Valleys were awarded a penalty and successfully kicked the goal to take the win.
The U15 trophy was contested by the Pittsworth Danes taking on a sizeable Souths outfit. The Pittsworth Boys got out to a great start scoring a try in the opening minutes. It was a good tough encounter between the two teams with some very entertaining tries being scored as you would expect in the U15’s age group.
Although the scoreboard showed Pittsworth were victors 30-16 the boys unfortunately didn’t get to receive the winner’s trophy due to a breach of the interchange rules in the first half. So no winner was declared. This was disappointing finish to a good game but the boys accepted the decision and Souths showed great sportsmanship giving the Danes three cheers. Good to see boys!
The day ended with the much anticipated game with the Pittsworth boys taking on the inform Highfields Eagles. Now with the lights on and conditions very cold the footy was hot with Pittsworth putting in a great performance running in nine tries. Highfields were missing a few of their key players, and although never giving up they just couldn’t contain the young Danes who ran out winners 48 points to 16.
