Round 8 Preview

Another weekend of fantastic footy with two Super Saturday’s and a couple of traditional Sunday afternoon games.

Mackay Rugby League Patron Col Grosskruetz shares his thoughts.

AUSCOAL Super Cup (A Grade)

Saturday 17th May.  Proserpine v Souths at Proserpine.  7:00pm

A huge night in the Whitsunday’s with the defending premiers taking on an in form home side.  The Brahman’s were particularly impressive last in accounting for Magpies at home and this form line suggests they are hard to beat in front of home fans.  In a very open and competitive season Souths have undoubtedly been the most consistent performers but perhaps in the back of their minds will be the round one defeat at the hands of the Brahman’s.  Let’s give the home side the edge in a close one.

Saturday 17th May.  Wests v Brothers at Wests.  6:30pm

Wests have built nicely over the last month and their class is starting to shine through.  In contrast the Brethren have faulted somewhat in the last few weeks.  However, if we again go back to round one, fans will remember Brothers got the early jump on Wests and led by 20 at halftime.  I just can’t see lightening striking twice, particularly at Tiger Park.  Wests by 10.

Sunday 18thMay.  Sarina v Magpies at Sarina.  3:30pm

This is another intriguing battle.  By their own admission Magpies underperformed last week in an effort that would not have impressed Head Coach Jason Warr.  The key to this will be how well they bounce back from this.  Standing in their way will be a Sarina side that is temporarily riding high.  Their miraculous win in Moranbah was backed up with a very strong win against Brothers last round. I will stick with the home teams and back Sarina.

Sunday 18th May. Norths v Moranbah at North.  3:00pm

Norths will be embarrassed by their last up effort, particularly given that they have competed bravely in most games this season despite not recording a win.  Speaking with Norths head coach Nathan Blacklock during the week he certainly expects more from his players.  He is realistic as to where they are at talent wise but expects far greater commitment and spirit from his side.  Moranbah are also looking to turn around their fortunes after two very uncharacteristic losses at home.  Moranbah to rebound and win well.
