Biography
Will Chambers was widely regarded as rugby league's best centre, following a stellar 2017 in which he helped Australia to World Cup glory and played a big role in Queensland's 2-1 State of Origin series win over New South Wales.
Brisbane born, Chambers has league in his blood, with his grandfather, Max Telford, an Indigenous rugby league legend in the Tweed Valley of New South Wales.
The Chambers family moved to the Northern Territory when Will was just two, and he played junior rugby league for Nhulunbuy. Chambers was 13 when the family returned to Brisbane, where he attended Nudgee College, and played rugby union.
In 2006, Chambers was signed by the Melbourne Storm and played for feeder club Norths Devils in the Intrust Super Cup, before making his NRL debut for the club the following season. He played centre for the Storm in the 2009 NRL grand final win over Parramatta.
The following year, he switched to rugby union, signing with the Queensland Reds, before moving to Ireland to play for provincial side, Munster.
Chambers returned to the Storm in 2012, playing centre in the club's 14-4 win over Canterbury in the grand final.
In 2014, Chambers was named 18th man for Queensland for the first two games of the Origin series, and made his debut in Game III.
In 2015, he made his Test debut for Australia, against New Zealand, and went on to play seven times for his country, including the 6-0 win over England in the World Cup Final at Suncorp Stadium in 2017.
Earlier that year, Chambers had played centre in the Storm's 34-6 win over North Queensland in the NRL grand final.
He had two seasons with the Storm, before a season in Japan playing rugby union. Chambers returned to the NRL in 2021 and played nine matches for Cronulla Sharks.
He played 224 matches in the NRL, 215 with the Storm. He scored 82 tries for Melbourne and one for Cronulla. In 2022, he moved to the United States to play rugby union.
Our concern was Queensland, that was our focus, the job was getting it done for this great state.
