Biography

A big hitting backrower, Wally Fullerton Smith was a reliable contributor across all levels of the code.

The Roma product attended The Southport School, where he played rugby union. He resumed his club league career with Cities when he returned to Roma to complete his schooling at Roma State High.

He captained the school in the Amco Shield competition and represented Darling Downs Schoolboys.

Fullerton Smith signed with Redcliffe in 1978, making his first grade debut the following year.

Fullerton Smith earned his first Maroons' cap in 1983, and was immediately at home in rep footy.

That same year, he represented Australia against New Zealand, and toured Papua New Guinea and England with the Arthur Beetson coached Queensland side. He played 12 State of Origin matches between 1983 and 1990, and was Man of the Match in Game III of the 1985 series.

Wally was a quality rugby league player and is now a tremendous supporter of the foundation.

Kev Embrey Men of League

Fullerton Smith represented his country eight times between 1983 and 1988, five times against Great Britain; twice against New Zealand and once against a Rest of the World Selection.

He also toured New Zealand with the Kangaroos in 1985. St George recruited him from Redcliffe in 1987 and he was part of the Dragons outfit which beat Balmain in the final of the 1988 Panasonic Cup at Parramatta Stadium.

Fullerton Smith loved travel, and had stints with Tonneins and Cannes in France, and Leeds in England.
