Biography
A butcher by trade, Ty Williams grew up playing his junior rugby league with the Innisfail Leprechauns, before he was signed by the North Queensland Cowboys.
Williams made his NRL debut in 2002, scoring 13 tries in 21 appearances that year. Williams played all three State of Origin matches in 2005, and was one of a record six Cowboys chosen for Game I of the series, a game in which he scored a try on debut, as the Maroons won in golden point extra time.
The young flyer played on the wing in the Cowboys' loss to Wests Tigers in the 2005 NRL grand final.
His 110-metre try against Manly at Brookvale Oval in Round 21 that season has been shown countless times. He scored three tries that day in a 26-24 win.
Williams played 151 games for Cowboys, also filling in at fullback and centre, before announcing his retirement from the NRL, at the end of the 2010 season. He had battled injury for much of his time since that wonderful 2005 season. An Achilles problem restricted him to just five games in 2006, and the next year he suffered a knee injury, which required cartilage graft surgery.
It was a great credit to him that he was able to return to the Cowboys top side in 2010, despite not being the brilliant running force of previous years.
Williams finished his NRL career as the second highest try scorer the club’s history with 85, behind fellow Cowboys' and Maroons' legend, Matt Bowen (130 tries) who started that 110m try at Brookvale, in 2005. Kyle Feldt has since passed his try tally.
His legacy extends far beyond the rugby league field and his amazing exploits for the Cowboys, Maroons and Northern Pride.
Jason Demetriou Former Northern Pride coach
After retiring from the NRL, Williams played for Cairns-based Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup until 2013, before returning to Innisfail, to captain-coach the Leprechauns.
He went on to coach the Pride in the Hostplus Cup, and to also take on the role as Head of Football.
