Biography

Tonie Carroll was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, and moved to Australia at a young age.

Carroll grew playing his junior footy with South Woodridge, before later joining Easts Tigers - where he was eventually spotted by the Brisbane Broncos.

In 1996, Carroll made his first-grade debut with the Broncos, before making his official NRL debut in 1998.

Later that year, Carroll was selected to make his State of Origin debut in Game I of the 1998 series.

Carroll capped of a stellar year, scoring a try in Broncos 38-12 grand final victory over the Bulldogs.

Tonie Carroll - A beast in maroon

In 2000, Carroll won his second NRL grand final with the Broncos in their 14-6 victory over the Roosters. Later that year, Carroll was selected to make his international debut for New Zealand in the World Cup.

The following year, Carroll signed a two-year deal with the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League, before returning to the Broncos in 2003. Carroll became the first player since Billy Kelly in 1914 to play for both Australia and New Zealand when he was selected to play for the Kangaroos in the Tri Nations series in 2004.

Tunza puts fear into the opposition. I've seen heaps of players over the years change direction when they look up and see him in the line.

In 2006, Carroll was a part of the Maroons side that claimed a famous 2-1 series victory over New South Wales to start Queensland’s decade of dominance.

Later that year, Carroll won his third NRL grand final with the Broncos in their 15-8 victory over Melbourne Storm.

Carroll announced his retirement from the game at the end of the 2009 NRL season, finishing his career having won three NRL premierships, and played 218 NRL games for the Broncos, seven Tests for Australia, five Tests for New Zealand and 18 Origins for Queensland where he won three series with the Maroons.
