Biography
The oldest of the talented trio of Walters' brothers to represent Queensland (twins, Kevin and Kerrod made their debuts in 1989), Steve 'Boxhead' Walters made his name with the Canberra Raiders, featuring in three winning grand final sides.
A product of Ipswich's Booval Swifts, Walters joined Norths in Brisbane in 1984, as the replacement for Greg Conescu, who had moved to Gladstone.
Walters signed with Canberra in 1986, and played 11 seasons with the club, before finishing his career with North Queensland Cowboys (1997-1998) and then Newcastle Knights (1999).
He made his Origin debut in 1990, and was a regular in the Maroon jersey until 1996, playing 14 matches for Queensland. His rivalry with NSW hooker, Ben Elias became the stuff of legend.
Walters made his Test debut for Australia in 1991, and went on to play 16 Tests, as well as touring of Britain and France with the 1994 Kangaroos.
He also played all three 'Tests' against Great Britain on the Super League tour of England in 1997, when the coach was inaugural Origin hooker, John Lang.
Hooker Steve Walters evokes memories of the old-style hooker who won scrums and games with skilful, tough play.
Roy Masters Rugby league journalist
Walters was cool under pressure; his passing game second to none; and he possessed a sixth sense about when to run from dummy half. Solidly built, he was also a noted defender. A knee injury prematurely ended his playing days with Newcastle, but he remained on to mentor future Test hooker, Danny Buderus.
Since his retirement from the playing field, Walters has been a long-time manager with the Queensland Maroons' side, and more recently joined his brother, Kevin on the staff at the Brisbane Broncos.
He has also dabbled in the media. Walters was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2008.
