Biography

A true larrikin, Russell Bawden was a skilful backrower who emerged from Mount Isa, where he played for the Town Club and represented the region in the Foley Shield competition.

Bawden was signed for the Broncos by coach, Wayne Bennett and made his first grade debut in 1994. He played for the London Broncos between 1995 and 1997, before being signed by Melbourne Storm on the recommendation of London team mate, Terry Matterson.

Bawden went on to play 101 NRL games for Melbourne, scoring 23 tries, a wonderful strike rate. Bawden came off the bench in Melbourne's 1999 grand final win over St George Illawarra. Premiership glory was followed by a Queensland debut in 2000, with Bawden playing two matches off the bench.

I think I got just three minutes in my debut, but my parents were there and I was happy to be a part of it.

Bawden also played in Game II of Queensland's series win over New South Wales in 2001.

Bawden returned to England for three more seasons with London, before finishing his playing career in the French Elite I competition.

Bawden’s work ethic saw him earn carpentry qualifications during his playing career, and he has worked in the building game since his retirement.
