Biography
They don’t come any tougher than 'Rocket' Rod Reddy, the lock / second rower who thrived on physicality and setting the tone in one of league’s most brutal eras.
The Rockhampton junior joined Sydney powerhouse, St George in 1972, aged just 17, and it wasn’t long before he made a name for himself, courtesy of high-impact defence, powerful running and an uncanny ability to get the ball away in a tackle.
Premiership success came Reddy’s way in 1977 and 1979, with grand final wins over Parramatta and Canterbury-Bankstown respectively. Reddy made his Test debut in 1977 and toured Britain and France with the Kangaroos in 1978.
He has the sort of unforgettable charisma that belongs in a Hall of Fame.
Robert "Crash" Craddock Sports journalist
In 1979, he played all three Tests against the touring British side, but lost his Test spot to bitter Parramatta rival, Ray Price in 1980. Still, he was a natural choice to don the Maroon in Origin’s first ever clash that same year. Like skipper, Arthur Beetson, it was Reddy's debut for his home state, after being a regular in New South Wales' sides.
Reddy toured Britain and France with the undefeated Kangaroos in 1982.
After 12 seasons with St George, Reddy played two seasons for Illawarra Steelers, before finishing his playing career in Townsville in 1988, as captain-coach of the Townsville representative side, which won the coveted Foley Shield.
Reddy coached the Adelaide Rams and had a stint as a player / coach, then coach of Barrow in England.
His son, Joel played first grade with Parramatta, Wests Tigers and South Sydney, and represented City against Country. Reddy's other son, Liam became a top soccer goal keeper and daughter, Bianca made her name in netball.
