Green made his Origin debut in 1999, after he signed a two-year deal with North Queensland Cowboys, becoming the first player to be chosen for Origin, from the club.
Green went on to play seven games for the Maroons between 1999-2001, three at halfback; three as interchange player and one as hooker. He was famously moved from halfback to hooker in the 2001 decider, following the return of Allan Langer from England, a match won 40-14 by Queensland, with Green giving immaculate service from dummy half.
In 2001, Green returned to Sydney, signing with the Roosters, before joining Parramatta in 2003. He finished his career with the Brisbane Broncos in 2004.
Green became part of the Broncos' coaching staff, and also did commentary work for FOX Sports. A Harvard Business School graduate, he worked with the Queensland Academy of Sport, before coaching Wynnum Manly to back-to-back Queensland Cup titles in 2011-2012.
Green joined the Sydney Roosters' coaching staff in 2013, before being appointed head coach at the Cowboys, guiding the club to its first NRL title, in 2015.
In 2021, he coached Queensland, with the Maroons winning Origin III 20-18 on the Gold Coast, after losing the first two matches of the series.
