Biography
Wynnum Manly's Neil Tierney won the Rothman’s Medal as Best and Fairest Player in the Brisbane competition in 1989, receiving the Medal from Rugby League Immortal, Johnny Raper, the legendary former St George lock forward.
Tierney, a former Wynnum High student, was in the police force then, and had played for the Academy side, as well having a stint with Brothers in Rockhampton.
A mobile, skilful prop, he went on to play four seasons for St George, starting in the front row in the 1992 grand final loss to the Broncos.
Tierney spent two seasons with Western Suburbs Magpies, before his career hit new heights in 1996, when he joined Manly and played in the ARL grand final win over St George.
Neil Tierney had a lot of skill, but he was used as a bit of a work horse in the middle in his early years in Sydney.
Glenn Lazarus Former Broncos, New South Wales and Australian prop
His toil paid further dividends in 1997, when he played all three matches for Queensland, as a starting prop.
He came off the bench in Manly's 22-16 loss to Newcastle in the ARL grand final that year.
He played two more seasons for the Sea Eagles. His brother, Noel was also a fine footballer, and played first grade for Wynnum Manly.
