Biography

Lote Tuqiri played junior rugby league with Brothers St Pauls in Logan City, where he was spotted by secondary schools official, Phil Hall, who recommended him to legendary Broncos' scout, Cyril Connell.

The former Sunnybank High student made his NRL debut in 1999, playing 18 games and winning the club’s Rookie of the Year award.

In 2000, Tuqiri was a try-scoring revelation for the Broncos, crossing 18 times in 26 games, including scoring the first try in the 14-6 grand final win over the Roosters.

Later that year, Tuqiri made his international debut for Fiji, captaining the country of his birth in the Rugby League World Cup in Britain and France.

Tuqiri was part of Wayne Bennett's bold strategy when the Broncos' coach returned to Origin coaching in 2001.

Tuqiri was one of 10 debutants in Game I, with Queensland winning 34-16, to set the platform for a series win, after NSW had humiliated the Maroons the previous year.

In 2002, Tuqiri scored three tries in Origin II at Brisbane's ANZ Stadium.

He switched to rugby union with the Waratahs in 2003, and played 67 Tests for the Wallabies, to become a dual international.

Lote Tuqiri in his prime

Mid-way through 2009, he moved to England to play club union for Leicester, before returning to the NRL with Wests Tigers. He returned to rugby union with Irish side, Leinster at the end of 2013.

Tuqiri signed with South Sydney in 2014 and won his second NRL premiership, as the Rabbitohs cruised to a 30-6 victory over Canterbury in the grand final.

Tuqiri announced his retirement from the game at season's end, having played 167 NRL games; nine League Tests for Australia and six for Fiji, as well as six Origin matches.

Lote can fill any position in the backline whether it be centre, fullback or wing, he's got a bit of versatility about him.

Tuqiri made his Australian League Test debut in 2001 and played five times in the green and gold, before his switch to union. On his return to league in 2010, he played for the Kangaroos again, in four Test matches.

In recent years he has been involved with Easts Tigers in Brisbane as a volunteer and coach, and he is an ambassador for beach rugby.
