Biography
The total package as a player, Gene Miles has enjoyed a remarkable career, on and off the football field.
The Townsville junior headed south to Wynnum Manly in 1981, as a 21-year-old, and made an immediate impact, starting his legendary Origin career the following year. Miles had it all – the speed to play in the centres, the size to rival many forwards, and a famous off-loading ability, which could be partly put down to his basketball experience as a youngster.
His defence was strong and Geno was always willing to work hard to take pressure off other players.
Mal Meninga FOG #4
His centre partnership with Mal Meninga was one of the greatest pairings in league history. In 1983, they became the first Queensland centre combination in an Australian team since Noel Hazzard and Alex Watson in 1954.
Miles played 14 Tests for Australia and toured Britain and France with the 1982 and 1986 Kangaroos. He also represented Oceania against Europe in Paris in 1984.
He played 20 Origin matches, his last in the second row in a 36-16 win in the third match of the 1989 series, when Queensland achieved a clean-sweep.
He played seven other matches for Queensland, touring Papua New Guinea and England with the Maroons in 1983, and New Zealand in 1987.
Maroons legend Gene Miles in the Origin arena
Miles, who played his first senior club football for Townsville Souths, and represented Townsville in the Foley Shield, was a dominant force in Brisbane Rugby League, winning premiership with Wynnum Manly in 1982, 1984 and 1986, and being named Rothmans Gold Medallist, as the BRL's Best and Fairest, in 1987.
In 1988, he was one of the first players signed by the Brisbane Broncos, and in 1990 was appointed captain.
He played with legendary English club, Wigan in 1991-1992, returning to his favoured centre spot, and helping the club to Championship and Challenge Cup success.
Miles remains part of Queensland’s fabric, as executive chairman of the FOGS.
