Biography
Gary Smith played for Australian under 18s against Great Britain Colts in 1981, alongside future Queensland Origin players, such as Martin Bella and Trevor Paterson.
The hard-working backrower from Nanango cracked first grade with Caloundra Sharks when he was just 17, and joined Brisbane Brothers in 1984.
Gary Smith was one of those players that you didn't really notice, but he was always doing his job. He was a quiet achiever.
Ross Strudwick
In 1987, Smith, Brett le Man and Tony Rea formed a formidable backrow in the premiership winning Brothers' side, coached by Ross Strudwick.
That same year, Smith toured New Zealand with the Maroons, and made his Origin debut in the first game of the series, coming off the bench.
Smith signed with North Sydney in 1988 and played five seasons with the Bears.
He finished his career at Ivanhoes club in Cairns.
