Biography

Goal-kicking forward Ethan Lowe played all 28 games as the North Queensland Cowboys galloped to a NRL grand final win in 2015.

Noted for making the tough metres, he also had the ability to off-load under pressure.

Lowe played junior rugby league for the Goondiwindi Boars, before attending noted league college, St Marys, in Toowoomba, where he also played club league for Valleys. He spent two seasons with Sydney Roosters in their under 20s squad and represented the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis in 2011, but was not offered a NRL contact.

He headed to Townsville to try his luck, starting the 2013 season with Cairns-based Northern Pride, before making his NRL debut for the Cowboys against Gold Coast Titans in Round 12.

There’s not the up and down and inconsistency with his game. You know what you’re going to get and he delivered on the biggest stage.

The tall second rower played every minute of the Cowboys extra time, golden point win over the Broncos in the 2015 grand final.

In February, 2016, he helped the Cowboys to a 38-4 win over Leeds in the World Club Challenge clash at Headingley, a match locked 4-4 at halftime.

In 2017, he took over the goal kicking role at the Cowboys after skipper, Johnathan Thurston was ruled out through injury. Lowe finished as the club's leading points scorer with 102, including 47 goals from 59 shots, for a strike rate of nearly 80 per cent.

His running game went from strength to strength in 2017, and he averaged 120 metres a game, on top of 30 tackles a game. He played second row in the Cowboys' 34-6 loss to Melbourne in the grand final.

Lowe was part of the Queensland Emerging Origin Squad for five years, and finally was rewarded for his form, with a call up for the Game III decider, in the 2019 series. He had a debut to remember, topping the tackle count for Queensland with 52, and kicking a perfect four from four goals, under intense pressure. He levelled the scores with a challenging conversion attempt, late in the match, before the Blues snatched victory, with a try at the death.

Lowe had switched to South Sydney in 2019, and finished his career at the Rabbitohs the following year, forced into retirement by a neck injury.

He played 143 NRL games, 108 of them at the Cowboys, scoring 24 tries and kicking 69 goals.

He took on a job as a mortgage broker, after hanging up the boots.
