Biography

A product of the Holy Spirit Club at Bray Park in Pine Rivers, Dane Carlaw played league and union at Padua College, and represented Australian Schoolboys in league in 1997.

That same year he played for the Australian Under 17 Super League side against New Zealand. Broncos' recruitment chief, Cyril Connell had signed Carlaw to the club as a 16-year-old.

After playing Queensland Cup for Broncos' affiliate, Brothers at Crosby Park, Carlaw made his NRL debut in Round 11, 1999. He was Broncos' Rookie of the Year in 2000, after he and Shane Webcke were props in the grand final win over the Roosters.

Dane Carlaw Origin highlights

In 2001, Carlaw made his Origin and Test debuts, playing all three matches against New South Wales, as well as all three Tests on the Kangaroo Tour of Great Britain. Carlaw played a total of six Tests for Australia and 13 matches for Queensland, his last appearance in Maroon coming in the 2007 series victory.

He is best remembered for a try in the final minute of the third and deciding match of the 2002 series, in Sydney. After magnificent lead-up work by Shaun Berrigan, Darren Smith and Allan Langer, Carlaw burst onto the ball on the right side of the field, brushing past one defender and then bursting through the tackle of another to score. That made the score 18-18, and because Queensland had won the 2001 series, the success or otherwise of the conversion, was academic.

Dane was a great player, who was all about the team.

Lote Tuqiri missed the kick, but Queensland had retained the Shield. Carlaw won a second NRL title in 2006, coming off the bench in the Broncos' 15-8 win over Melbourne in the grand final. He played one more season with Brisbane, before heading to Perpignan in France, to play for Catalans Dragons in Super League.

In 2011, he returned to Brisbane and played seven first grade matches for the Broncos, on a dual-registration deal with Wynnum Manly, taking his Broncos' match total to 188. He won Cup titles with Wynnum in 2011 and 2012, under the coaching of Paul Green.

In 2013, Carlaw graduated from the Emergency Services Academy as a Queensland Fire Service Officer.

He played several interstate 'firies' matches for Queensland.
