Biography
Tough and uncompromising, Craig 'Knuckles' Greenhill earned six Maroons caps in a courageous NRL career.
A proud Wynnum Manly Seagull, Greenhill followed in family footsteps, with his uncles, Lew and Bob Greenhill having played for the club.
Legendary Maroon Arthur Beetson (FOG #1) recruited Greenhill to his Cronulla Sharks in 1994. While Beetson’s role as Cronulla coach was soon handed to John Lang (FOG #12), Greenhill developed quickly into an established first-grader, in a powerful pack.
In 1996, he won Queensland selection as an impactful bench forward. He went down in Origin history as the first man sent off since the concept started in 1980. He was marched by referee, David Manson in the 62nd minute of Game II of the 1996 series, as a result of a high shot on New South Wales' prop, Paul Harragon.
In 1997, Greenhill toured England with the Super League Australian side, playing two 'Tests' against Great Britain, after having played against the Kiwis earlier in the year.
He is as strong as a bull, but Craig would never try to take a man high. It is not his style.
Shane Richardson Former Cronulla chief executive
A severe neck injury in 1998 threatened to end Greenhill's career, but he defied the odds to return to football, and to play with his trademark aggression.
His form for new club, Penrith, saw him rewarded with a return to the Origin arena in 1999, and he played all three games in the front row, in a drawn series, which saw Queensland retain the shield.
The 1999, outfit included three Wynnum products - Greenhill, Chris McKenna and Paul Green.
At the end of the 2001 season, following 116 first grade matches with Cronulla and Penrith, Greenhill headed to England to play with Hull, where he spent two seasons, before having one season with Castleford.
Greenhill finished his playing career with his beloved Wynnum Manly.
