Biography
Chris Walker was born in Brisbane, while his father, Gary was playing for Brothers, under the coaching of Wayne Bennett.
Chris, who describes his father and Wayne as the biggest influences on his career, went on to play under Bennett at the Broncos and in Queensland State of Origin sides.
The Walker family moved back to the Darling Downs from Brisbane, and Chris played club football for Toowoomba Valleys, and also played league at St Mary's College.
He joined the Broncos in 1997, joining his brothers, Ben and Shane at the club. Chris made his NRL debut for the club in 1999, scoring four tries in 10 appearances.
Walker performed on the Origin stage
Two years later, he was selected to make his Origin debut in Game I at Suncorp Stadium, scoring a try in the Maroons' 34-16 win. He scored again in the return match in Sydney, and scored twice in the decider at Brisbane's ANZ Stadium, won 40-14 by Queensland. Walker also played all three Origin matches in the 2002 drawn series.
After 67 appearances for the Broncos, Walker signed with South Sydney in 2003, before making a mid-season switch to the Roosters. Walker played on the wing for the Roosters in their 2003 and 2004 NRL grand final losses, to Penrith and Canterbury-Bankstown, respectively.
He played 47 games for the Roosters before signing with Melbourne Storm in 2006. In 2007, Walker was picked up by new club, Gold Coast Titans, and had the honour of scoring the first try for the club in the Round 1 20-18 loss to St George. In fact, Walker scored two tries that afternoon and landed three goals.
I’ve got no regrets, I played 11 years of first grade football, I played two years of Origin football and there is nothing I'd change.
Chris Walker FOG #122
Walker spent three seasons with the Titans, before signing with Catalans Dragons in France in 2010. He returned to Australia to play with Parramatta.
In 2015, Walker played under the coaching of his brothers, Ben and Shane at Ipswich Jets, helping the club to a Intrust Super Cup grand final win over Townsville, before also appearing in Ipswich's 26-12 win over Newcastle in the State Championship final, which was played before the NRL grand final.
In retirement, Walker has been prominent in his work for various charities.
A naturally gifted athlete, he was unlucky not to have played for Australia, with injuries and off-field controversies playing a role. He finished with 151 NRL games to his credit.
