Biography

Versatile Chris McKenna represented the Australian Under 15 Schoolboys in 1992 while a student at Iona College, and a junior footballer with Wynnum Manly.

In 1993 he represented Australia at Under 19 level as a centre, progressing through Queensland’s representative pathways and forming a partnership with Sarina product, Wendell Sailor (FOG #93).

McKenna played for the Brisbane Broncos from 1992-1994, making his top grade debut as a centre, against Illawarra in Round 8, 1993.

Chris McKenna's versatility and dedication made him the ultimate professional.

Bob Linder FOG #42

In 1995, he was an inaugural South Queensland Crusher. A hamstring injury suffered at the World Sevens hampered McKenna for most of the first half of the 1995 season, and when he returned from injury, he partnered Lismore product, David Krause in the centres.

McKenna was switched to his preferred lock position late in the season. He signed with Cronulla in 1997, and represented Queensland in Super League's Tri-Series.

He played second row in the 26-8 loss to the Broncos in the Super League grand final. McKenna made his Origin debut for Queensland in 1999, as a second-rower, in the same series that another Wynnum product, Paul Green also debuted for the Maroons. In the 2002 series, McKenna played in the centres.

McKenna played two Tests for Australia, one at centre, and the other as an interchange player.

McKenna had had stints in England with Sheffield and London in the 1990s, and after six seasons with Cronulla, headed to the UK again in 2003, playing first with Leeds; and then Bradford, finishing up with Doncaster in 2008. He won a Super League Premiership with Leeds.

Since his playing days, McKenna has remained closely connected with the code through the Wynnum Old Boys, and coaching and development roles with Redlands Districts, and the Wynnum Academy.
