Biography
The legendary Chris “Choppy” Close bleeds Maroon – his Queensland legacy goes far beyond his outstanding days as a powerhouse centre.
In an era when State of Origin was establishing itself, Close’s passion and bravery were critical in showcasing the Maroon spirit.
Choppy Close - True Queenslander
However, he always gave praise to others.
"I won the man of the match award in that first Origin game, but if they went on courage and determination, there's no way in the world Arthur Beetson wouldn't have won it," Close said.
Never afraid to take charge on the pitch, Close’s leadership made him a natural fit to become team manager in 1995, when Queensland once again defied all the odds to win – just as Choppy’s Maroons did in Origin’s formative years.
Of course I gave my all for my state, but I didn't hate New South Wales like Chris Close did. Choppy wanted to kill them all.
Kerry Boustead FOG #3
He was first chosen for Queensland, under the residential rules, from the Valleys club in 1979, but was playing for Redcliffe when chosen for Origin.
His club career then took him to Manly Warringah, before he become a member of the inaugural Gold Coast side, in 1988.
Close played three Tests for Australia, and toured New Zealand twice.
