Biography
One of the most thrilling sights in rugby league in the 1990s was the red-headed flash that was Brett Dallas, sprinting down a Queensland wing.
Blessed with lightning speed, Dallas was a schoolboy star at St Patrick's College, Mackay, and represented Queensland at under 17 level.
He was signed from Mackay by Canterbury-Bankstown in 1992, scoring a try on debut against Cronulla, aged 17. He played two more first grade games that season, and scored a try in each one.
When he made his Queensland debut in Game III of the 1993 series, he was the State's youngest Origin player, with Ben Ikin assuming the mantle in 1995, when Dallas returned to the Origin arena, after missing out in 1994.
Queensland won the 1995 series 3-0, with Dallas scoring tries in Game II and Game III. His 90 metre-try in in the 80th minute of Game II at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, has gone down in Origin folklore, as it put the seal on the Queensland victory, his dash sparking wild sideline celebrations.
When Brett Dallas scored that runaway try (at the MCG in 1995), we knew we had the series wrapped up.
Trevor Gillmeister FOG #51
Dallas scored two tries in his Test debut against the Kiwis that year, but an ankle injury ruled him out of the rest of the series. The injury also forced him out of the Bulldogs side for grand final, in which they beat Manly-Warringah.
But he was part of Australia's World Cup squad in Britain in October / November that year, playing in the final at Wembley, when Australia beat England 16-8. All-up, he played six Tests for his country, his last against Fiji, in 1996.
Dallas signed with North Sydney in 1996 and played four seasons with the Bears, playing six Origin games from the club, to take his tally to 10.
He finished his career with Wigan in England, spending seven seasons at the Greater Manchester club, where he was a fan favourite. After his last match, he gave his boots to a youngster in the stands.
