Biography
A wily five-eighth or centre, Allan Smith enjoyed a fruitful career at Valleys in Toowoomba, from where he gained Toowoomba Clydesdales and Queensland Country selection, as well as representing his state six times under the old residential rules, before becoming the first Maroon pivot in the Origin cauldron, with Wally Lewis at lock.
In the final, full interstate series before Origin - in 1979 - Smith scored a record four tries in Game III at Sydney's Leichhardt Oval.
Smith, he’s played well so far Smith! He’s been in everything.
Billy Smith Rugby league commentator
Smith’s ability saw North Sydney lure him across the border for two seasons, before he signed for the inaugural Canberra Raiders campaign in 1982.
Smith, Jay Hoffman, Rowan Brennan and John McLeod were the first of a long list of prominent Queenslanders to play in the lime green of Canberra.
The following year, Smith took on the captain-coach role at Surfers Paradise Pirates. He went on to become a Queensland and Australian selector.
